EON Thriving Communities Program
EON Thriving Communities Program
Founded in 2005, EON is a WA based not-for-profit organisation that delivers a food and nutrition focused healthy lifestyle and disease prevention program. The Program is now established and proven in 16 Indigenous communities in Western Australia. We build edible gardens in remote Indigenous schools and communities for a secure supply of fresh food, and partner with them to deliver a hands-on practical gardening, nutrition education, cooking and hygiene program.
EON has received funding from BHP Billiton to deliver the EON Thriving Communities Program at South Hedland Primary School over a five year period.
Delivery of the program began in September 2014. The main parts of the program at South Hedland Primary School are:
EON Edible Gardens
Students have established a large vegetable and fruit gardens in the school. In the process the students learn how to grow, harvest and use the fresh produce.
EON Healthy Eating
We partner with Pilbara Population Health to deliver nutrition and cooking lessons, we use available produce from the school garden.
