Welcome to South Hedland Primary

South Hedland Primary School was opened in 1972 to serve the newly developing community of South Hedland. Whilst the school was being built the children were taken by bus to Cooke Point. The inaugural Principal was Ron Carmody and 196 students commenced. The school’s population peaked at around the 650 mark in the mid seventies. It has now stabilized around 230 including Kindergarten students.

A feature of the school is its commitment to inclusive practices. The school caters for children from a number of ethnic backgrounds and welcomes them into the school program. The school is proud of the variety of educational programs it is able to offer to ensure that the students make good progress in their primary years.

Our school is regarded by the community as promoting a supportive learning environment where all staff demonstrate concern and care for children. School leadership is shared & cohesive and is strengthened by its strong collegial atmosphere. The school is responsive to changing needs and has implemented many innovative programs over the years to target the specific needs of the students and the school community.

Priorities include a focus on improving attendance as well as improving literacy & numeracy achievement. Specialist programs offered to students include LOTE-Indonesian, Visual Art, Physical Education and Science. A strong pastoral care program is embedded within the school practice and the school has achieved much success through a Positive Behaviour Support approach to behaviour management. The school is fortunate in being able to offer the latest technology to students with interactive whiteboards installed in all teaching areas and through the innovative use of iPads.
